The World without the Internet: Better or Not? An article by Sonja Carlson

The world today is widely affected by the internet. Once the internet was created and quickly grew, it changed all of society. So the question is, would we be able to survive if the internet somehow disappeared?

Some people say that they think everyone would be just fine after some adjusting, since the world was perfectly fine before the internet and could still be. Yet others say that it would be just too hard.

“I think it would be chaos,” said Lisa Brewer, a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho, when asked what she thought the world would be like without the internet. “Our way of communicating with people these days is through the internet. And our source of information is the internet. We rely on it rather than books.”

Many places, including the BYU-Idaho campus, are even debating replacing their books with all online databases. This is just one example of how the internet is changing the world we live in. It is true, that if the internet disappeared, a lot of problems would be solved, such as pornography and internet addiction itself. People would start spending more time with their families. Of course there is always the fact that people could find porn elsewhere and could get addicted to something else rather than the internet. However, there would still be a significant change. The internet is simply too easy to get to at times.

But do the good things about the internet outweigh the bad? Because of the World Wide Web, business have boomed, friends and family members have reconnected, students have unlimited access to learning, and everything just seems to be, overall, easier to do. With the click of a button, a plane ticket to anywhere in the world can be bought. A friend can be found. A book can be read, an email sent, a business created. Simple.

Is the internet that vital of a part of our lives? Or is it just making the world a lazy place? The decision is yours. Will you be affected by it?

Is this what the internet does to you?

The internet is such a huge part of our lives......
We can even get it on our phones....
Would this happen to you if the internet disappeared?

Notebook: Internet Addiction (CBS News)

Suffice the Cravings: an Article by Britney Peters

What might happen if the internet crashed:

In the last few years the World Wide Web has become a sweet addiction. With the resent destruction of the Internet, people are faced with having to quit this addiction cold turkey. With the need of the entertainment and resources still in affect, people are searching for alternatives to the web. One of these new alternatives is the opening of a new line of libraries across the U.S.A. These libraries are funded by the government and will be houses to one of the biggest physical sources of information the world has ever scene.

Since the loss of the web on August 24, 2010 people have been rather distressed. Schools have contemplated closing down and many businesses have gone bankrupt. In hopes to stabilize society the government has put into action their plan of producing a line of the Great American Libraries. They hope to have opened their first one in New York City, by January of 2011. Although the World Wide Web can never really be replaced, the government hopes to be able to provide the next best thing. As head of the Library Association of the U.S.A stated “ we plan on bringing easily accessible knowledge to the nation, we cannot stand the thought of a ignorant nation!” Although no one knows exactly how helpful the governments approach will be, it is clear that they are doing their best to bring accessible knowledge to the masses.

The craving for knowledge and entertainment has recently been very evident. It is obvious that the government is taking action and they have laid out a few guidelines on how the Library system will work. In relation to payment, the plan is to have a system similar to how people paid for Internet. According to their needs and wants, people will pay monthly with a fixed rate. A new service of home delivery and pick up will also be available to any customers who want to pay a small extra fee. These services anticipate that people will feel more inclined to use libraries more often and thus bring suffice to the chaos of the death of the web.

The government’s plan for the Great American Libraries are meant to help people cope with the loss of the World Wide Web. Since Internet has become a thing of the past, the only way to fix things is to bring back libraries, something that has been on the back burner for too long. Americans are craving what the web used to fulfill and now this craving can be sufficed with the come back of libraries.

Life Without the Internet? Better or Not? An article by Vicky Mejia

In the new generation of technology many people are so used to the easy and fast way. This would include anywhere from cell phones, television, and the internet; among many. However the internet has become a huge means by which people communicate and research. This is why we decided to ask people what they would do if there was no more internet in the world or anything like it.

How many of us check our Facebook, twitter, or other types of online communications sites? These websites have enabled us to not only communicate with people but they have allowed us to do many things. People can read about what their friends or people they know are doing, check their pictures, or even chat with them. So when we asked what people would do if they didn’t have the internet, one of the major questions was, does that include Facebook? These social sites have become major parts of peoples’ lives. Thus making it not very shocking, but it just proves how much people need their social websites.

The internet is also used for research, like Googling, or even finding things out. The next big thing that was on our interviewees minds’ was how are we going to do research? One girl suggested that we would have to spend more time in the library and it would not be as convenient. Another girl talked about how we wouldn’t be able to use mormon.org. So people would not have the knowledge of the church at the click of a button. Whether the internet be for researching paper topics or the researching of a religion, life would be more complicated and even difficult without it.

It was definitely interesting to see how people thought about the loss of internet. Although there were negative feelings about it, there were still some that thought it wouldn’t be so bad. Some said that it would make life easier because they wouldn’t have those moments when the internet shuts down in the middle of something important. They said that as far as school goes, that it would also be easier because teachers would have to verbally explain things making everything more clear. They also said that once upon a time we didn’t have it, and life was still going on without it. With all of this, I learn that everyone is different on their feelings about the internet; having them being anywhere from lifeless to just fine without it.
